The importance of creating a trusted global information and communication technology (ICT) environment took centre stage at the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly 2016 (WTSA-16) in Hammamet, Tunisia this week.
According to Yuejin Du, Vice President of Technology at Alibaba Group, questions of trust will be an increasingly crucial concern for all stakeholders – including government, industry and consumers – as ICTs take an ever more central role in today’s digital economy, and in achieving the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Alibaba Group is China’s—and by some measures, the world’s—biggest online commerce company. Its three main sites—Taobao, Tmall and Alibaba.com—have hundreds of millions of users, and host millions of merchants and businesses. The company continues to enjoy strong growth, earning over RMB 100 billion (approximately 15.5 billion USD) in revenue in the 2016 fiscal year, a figure Alibaba expects will increase by 48% in the 2017 fiscal year.
“From my own perspective, security is very crucial for the entire industry,” he told ITU, during an on-the-spot interview at WTSA-16. “It’s the basis for setting trust between partners and private and public sectors.”
