The impact of VR on storytelling and consumer industries

Virtual Reality (VR) and 360 technologies are spreading rapidly throughout both the broadcast and consumer electronics industries.

On 17 October 2016, ITU hosted the Seminar on Virtual Reality and 360 in Broadcasting which presented the current state of the industry, and looked at topics including: what is VR?; VR storytelling; and its next steps.

ITU asked Si Lumb (@si_lumb), Senior Product Manager, BBC Research and Development, what the future holds for VR in broadcasting, and how Alibaba’s new VR payment technology will change the shape of consumer services.

“The thing that VR gives is more than just the gaming sector where it grew up.

Actually many other industries will benefit from the ability to put someone in a place; whether that is your high-street retailer for holidays, or homes and real estate, being able to place you in the property, or the hotel, or the resort in the future – through to training. People who are able to go to extreme situations, people who are learning or practicing, can have a whole range of new very real experiences through virtual reality that might help them learn, help them prepare.

And in fact, one of the best uses of it is just to get away and meditate.”
