WSIS+10 HIGH-LEVEL EVENT: PRE-EVENT MEETINGS 9TH June 2014

WSIS

The pre-event meetings on 9 June 2014, on the eve of the WSIS High-Level event, will give us an opportunity to take stock of achievements, brainstorm on future outcomes and build a common vision beyond 2015.

The WSIS+10 Pre-Event Meetings are scheduled to be organized at ITU (Montbrillant and Varembé Buildings), where the WSIS Forum Track will be kicked-off. This one-day event embodies the collaborative nature of WSIS and will provide a unique platform for all stakeholders to reveal their achievements in implementing the WSIS Outcomes, as well as the next steps that need to be taken beyond 2015. These pre-event meetings also provide the ideal platform to network and form new partnerships.

Over fifty workshops, interactive sessions and knowledge exchanges will bring together global stakeholders from Government, Private Sector, International Organizations and Civil Society. The distinguished panellists are all experts in their field.

The pre-event sessions demonstrate the open, collaborative and transparent nature of the WSIS Process. The audience will have an opportunity to hear expert testimonials and will be able to choose from a vast selection of themes exploring the catalytic of information and communication technologies in achieving goals ranging from Climate Change, ICT Infrastructure and enabling regulatory environment, Media, and Women’s Empowerment to Child Online Protection. It goes without saying that the engagement of our stakeholders in the elaboration of these pre-event meetings, as well as the information that will be presented, is of significant importance. In order to bridge the digital divide, we must take into account the strides that have already been made and the lessons that have been learnt during the past ten years.

The synergistic nature of the pre-event session is a reflection of the inclusive and collaborative nature of the Open Consultation Process, which took place from June 2013 to March 2014. The Thematic Workshops are based on requests from stakeholders, which were put forward during the Open Consultation Process. During this process, over a hundred submissions and inputs on the content of WSIS workshops were provided by WSIS Stakeholders.

In essence, the multi-stakeholder Pre-Event Meetings ahead of the WSIS+10 High-level Event provide an ideal platform for all involved stakeholders to share their experiences and ideas with other engaged stakeholders, as well with new stakeholders who would like to engage in the open and transparent WSIS Process. Let us dedicate ourselves to achieving the goals set out in the WSIS process and to bridge the digital divide so that everyone can reap the benefits of an inclusive, people-centred and development-oriented information society.

We look forward to welcoming you at ITU Headquarters for the Pre-Event Meetings on 9 June, 2014!

  1. The workshops are well balanced and cover a range of important and interesting topics. I will be organizing the workshop on the 2012 International Telecommunications Regulations (ITRs) which were approved, but not by all ITU Member States, at the World Conference on International Telecommunications (WCIT) in Dubai in December 2012.

Some commentators have referred to this as the “showdown in Dubai” and others have characterized it as an attempt to use the UN to impose censorship on the Internet. I have recently published an analysis that gives a rather different view of the event and of the ITRs.

The purpose of the workshop is to present differing views of WCIT and of the ITRs, so as to allow participants to draw their own conclusions.

  2. The great job of global consolidation in the area of ICT for development,
According to me ICT is a “techno socio economic phenomena”
